Add Stars or Star Trails to a Sky

How to Re-create

Believe me I would love to be able to have the time, equipment and money to travel to the types of places free from light pollution and muggy air that allow you to take long exposure photos of stars. That would be awesome! But sometimes it’s just not realistic so in this demo I am going to show you how to Photoshop star trails or the milky way in to a photo that you may already have that would be a perfect compliment to something like that.

  1. Set Blending mode to Screen
  2. Mask out where you don’t want stars to appear
  3. Make a Levels, Hue/Saturation and/or Color Balance adjustment layer(s) to help blend in the color and luminosity of the stars to your background.
  4. Duplicate these layers and then merge the duplicates
  5. Flip the duplicate, lower opacity, blur and mask out to create the reflection.
